Around the Region: Horse Rescued From Under Bridge, West Nile Virus Detected in Mosquito Samples and Child Injured in BB Gun Accident

Horse Rescued in Northwest CherokeeCanton-Sixes Patch

Authorities rescued a horse in northwestern Cherokee's Salacoa community Tuesday morning.

The horse appeared to be in distress under an old bridge on Hancock Mountain Trail when the Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services arrived at the scene, agency spokesman Tim Cavender said.

The Milton Animal Rescue Team and a wrecker service were called to help lift the animal back on its feet. After two attempts, rescuers were able to pull up the horse so it could stand.

Mosquito With West Nile Virus Found in Fulton CountyAlpharetta Patch

A mosquito sample in Wills Park has tested positive for the West Nile virus, according to a news release from the Fulton County Department of Health Services.

The Georgia Division of Public Health notified the department that mosquito samples in six Fulton County communities have tested positive for the West Nile virus.  A mosquito “sample” refers to a collection of mosquitoes from a particular area that is tested for the virus.

“August begins the peak season for West Nile virus,” said Patrice A. Harris, Director of Fulton County Health Services.  “The identification of these samples is a reminder to all of us to take precautions when outdoors.”

Child Injured in BB Gun AccidentDunwoody Patch

A 7-year-old child was injured Aug. 6 after using his BB gun to shoot the primer from a bullet. 

Dunwoody Police say that the child suffered non-life threatening injuries from the shrapnel.
