April 20, 1958: 'Ball of Fire'

A meteor was seen over Winder on this date in 1958.

A “ball of fire” was spotted at 8:20 p.m. April 20, 1958, in the sky over Winder. An astronomer at Agnes Scott College called the ball a “giant meteor.” According to reports, the meteor was a bright red sphere that left a short tail of red and white flames. Most of the congregation at the First Baptist Church of Winder saw the meteor when leaving the evening’s worship service.
